Â
Do you remember the study I shared recently? Here's another one I want to share with you. This one IS related to allergies in a very eye-opening (or shall I say skin-opening) way!
Â
In a study using mice from Yale School of Medicine, researchers found that if a new food was introduced into the gut while the skin was injured (cut, scrape, or even
sunburn), the animals developed allergies to that food.
Â
This may help explain why children with chronic skin conditions like eczema are up to 3x more likely to also have food allergies. In many cases, skin inflammation comes before allergic disease develops.
Â
This is the really interesting part...It appears that the immune
system may actually “flag” and 'remember' foods as dangerous if they show up while the skin is inflamed or damaged — even though the gut is normally okay with the introduction of new foods.
Â
👉 In other words, the allergens don't have to penetrate through broken skin at all. It's like the gut is communicating with the skin in times of stress/injury/overburden.
Â
Definitely something to think about.
