Hi ,Â
Â
Happy New Year to you🥂
Â
Before I get into my topic, I wanted to give you a heads up - my rate will be increasing beginning February by $5/session. It's been a few
years since my last update. I held off as long as I could.
Â
Now that I got that out of the way...
Â
I usually talk about allergies, but at this time of year many are looking to getting into healthy eating after all the indulging during the holidays, so I thought I'd share a few helpful nuggets.Â
Â
Most people believe health/weight loss is about calories, carbs, or willpower; but most aren't aware of how your body chooses whether to burn fat or store it.
Â
Here are 3 key things you need to wrap your head around 👇
Â
1. Fat loss is not calorie-driven
Calories don’t tell your fat cells what to do; insulin does.
When insulin is up, fat burning is off. When insulin comes down, fat burning turns back on.
Â
2. Your body uses ONE main fuel at a time
- Glucose (from
carbs), OR
- Fat (from dietary fat or stored body fat
3. Food combing is important
It’s not just what you eat — it’s what you eat together
Example:
Complex Carbs + lean protein = better fat burning later (apple + non-fat Greek yogurt)
Fat + protein = steady energy and continued fat burning (eggs, salmon, steak + vegetables)
Â
The problem arises when refined carbs (like bread, white rice, sugar...) and fat are eaten together too often (like potato chips),
pizza.
Â
4. Why so called “healthy” combos can block fat loss
Foods like pizza or a bagel with cream cheese can keep insulin up, which blocks fat burning, even if the calories seem reasonable. This is because the body has the fat and refined carbs together, so it doesn't know what you want it to do.
Â
5. This is physiology, not failure
If fat loss feels hard, it’s because your body is responding exactly as it was designed to.
Â
When insulin signaling is respected, fat burning turns back on, hunger improves, weight loss becomes easier. Fat loss is about eating differently. (Adapted from “Why Food Pairing Matters for Fat Loss” by R. Ferguson)
Â
Now for something completely unrelated...yet timely...from a well respected Naturopathic Doctor friend of mine:
