Everyone's back to school and back to routine and I've been missing in action again....
Remember my mom?
Well,
she finally got home mid August. Two weeks later on a Saturday, she fell and scratched herself pretty good. Back to the hospital...
They patched her up, didn't know when she had her last Tetanus shot, so they gave her one and sent her home. I wasn't there for that part.
This is where it gets interesting. Tetanus is no longer an isolated shot. It's a combination.
I asked the nurse which one it was to confirm my suspicion....It was TDaP (Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis). Recall, my mom is over age 97.
So later that afternoon, she had a fever and chills and then abdominal cramps. The fever and chills came from the shot and it's quite common.Â
Then with the abdominal pain, they decided to do a CT scan. The next doc
said she had colitis and referred a gastroenterologist to take a look. This is the 4th doc now. He said it wasn't colitis and that she could heal but needs a simple liquid/broth diet to calm things down. Great! He also looked at all the 8 new meds they had prescribed from the initial hospital visit and said "why is a 97 year old on so many meds?" There were a few there that needed to go and they did. It's important to note that with our family doc, we had already reduced them down from
10!
Anyways, they moved her to the geriatric ward Sunday and my Tuesday morning discovered she had C difficile (a bacterial infection). It's common in the elderly, after surgery, immune compromised and in hospital. She's still in the hospital, but antibiotics have done the job - she hasn't been on those in over 20+ years.Â
As an FYI, the doc on that floor,
put her right back on all the meds the other one took off...geez.
I could go on, but she should be coming home next week!
Â
A few of the things I've been giving her on the side are:Â
Marshmallow Root - to help the colon heal;Â
Saccharomyces boulardii - a probiotic strain that's very effective for C Difficile and can be taken at the same time as antibiotics;Â
Hawthorn - helpful for the cardiovascular system.Â
I can only give her those when I am there, but it's a start.Â
I will be adding in other probiotics when the antibiotics are finished. Slippery Elm is another herb that can help with the colon.
Â
Fingers crossed there are no more falls in the near future. Here's a picture of my mom at the hospital.
